Rev. Garner Russell Waller

Reverend
Dr. Johnson, who served as pastor of the Union Baptist
Church for nearly half a century, recommended that Reverend
Dr. Garnett Russell Waller become the first president
of the Branch. In addition to being a great civic leader,
Reverend Waller assisted in the organization of the YMCA,
the Baptist Orphanage, and the Niagara Movement. |

Dr. Lillie Carroll Jackson
(President 1935 - 1970)

Mrs.
Lillie Carroll Jackson served as President of the Branch
from 1935 until 1970. Mrs. Jackson, who devoted her life
to fighting for equality and justice, was also the founder
of the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP. Under her
leadership, branches were organized In counties throughout
the state. |

Mrs. Enolia P. McMillan
(President 1971 - 1990)

Mrs. Enolia
P. McMillan, Branch President for twenty-one years, and
National President for six years. During her leadership
she not only addressed local and national issues that
affected minorities, she also attacked global issues,
such as apartheid. During Mrs. McMillan's leadership,
the Branch purchased its first building at 8 W. 26th Street.
Mrs. McMillan was also instrumental in the decision to
move the NAACP National Headquarters from New York to
Baltimore. Mrs. McMillan is very proud of her role In
the establishment of more Black banks within the Baltimore
Metropolitan Area. Mrs. McMillan firmly believes that
the investment in youth programs at the Branch will insure
the future of the NAACP. |
